Ashwagandha in Ayurveda

Ashwagandha is said to be one of the most powerful herbs in Ayurveda and has been used since ages for a wide variety of conditions, especially for restorative benefits. Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means the “smell of a horse” which means that the herb that has the power to awaken the strength of the stallion referring to good immunity from diseases.

Also known as the Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha increases sexual stamina and has immense rejuvenation power. The stamina helps to them energize and balance the thoughts, which in turn, help their bodies to settle and sleep. Other health benefits of Ashwagandha include stress combat, blood sugar stabilization, improved memory and learning ability, cholesterol balance and anti-insomnia effects.

One major quality of Ashwagandha is that it is a good anti-aging agent. Regular consumption of Ashwagandha can show significant improvement in hemoglobin, red blood cell count and hair melanin in individuals, thereby making them youthful and healthy.

Ways to Use Ashwagandha:

  • The most popular method of taking Ashwagandha is in the form of a powder made from its roots. This is called Ashwagandha Churna and is taken in dosages of 1-3 grams, usually with meals.
  • Other preparations for consumption include – decoction, medicated wine or ghee, or as an extract. Ashwagandha root extracts can be consumed as tablets at a dosage of 2-4 250mg tablets per day.
  • Ashwagandha leaves can be made into a paste and be used for its anti-inflammatory properties to treat swellings, wounds or injuries.
  • A preparation of Ashwagandha processed with honey and ghee acts as an aphrodisiac, which is helpful in treating sexual anomalies like erectile dysfunction and low libido.
